In the 17th to 19th centuries, lamplighters would climb ladders in the evenings to light gas lamps in the streets. These were later replaced by kerosene and electric lamps, and the profession eventually disappeared. We invite you to become lamplighters like the one in Saint Exupéry’s The Little Prince and light up the “Žibinys” – each pedestrian crossing the integrated sensor at the intersection of Muitinės and J. Naugardo streets will make the lamp glow brighter, while each passing car will dim the light. The more pedestrians – the more light in the old town.
The minimalist form of the Žibinys reflects the slow pace and simplicity of the vanished lamplighter’s life. Its round shape recalls the smallest planet from The Little Prince, home to the lamplighter. Suspended above the street intersection, like a planet, it seeks to be equally visible from various alleys of the old town. It creates unexpected visual connections – even from the banks of the Nemunas – inviting people into the heart of the city.
